Lot’s wife. Do you ever think about her? As a child, I heard the story many times and it gave me the creeps. I took it very literally - she turned into a pillar of salt and that was the end. Recently I heard a speaker talk about Lot’s wife and it caused me to think more critically about the story. Isn’t it interesting that we don’t know her name? We only know her as Lot’s wife. In Genesis 19:17, God gives the family time to leave before the coming destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.” I know there are many interpretations of the story. In Luke 17:32, Jesus speaks about it in the context of warning the disciples about difficult times in the future. But as I thought about it, I considered the valley. In Psalm 23, it speaks of the valley of the shadow of death…the difficult times in our lives. For me, this was the illness and passing of my husband. It’s my valley. “Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills.” A lesson we can learn is to not stay in the valley. Don’t keep looking back. God has a future for us - escape to the hills.
It’s hard when we leave something wonderful behind. For you, it may be the loss of a loved one, a job, a home, a friendship, or a marriage. But God does not want us to dwell there. He still has more. I’m not saying to forget these things - but to know that God still has more ahead. Look up. See where He wants to take you next. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has plans for us - to give you a hope and a future.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13
Some of my fun this week!
My granddaughter turned one! Isn’t she adorable? She has such joy for books!
Another praise - I started a new job two weeks ago as a homeschool teacher. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for quite a while and am so excited to join The Cottonwood School.
